We bought five-eighths of an acre on the east side of town and began construction on that lot.

Although there were pastures and fields around us, we would not be isolated out in the country.  This was especially true after Richwood's grocery store later relocated to a new building across the street.

In the left background of this picture is the home of our neighbor to the west, Tom McMahon; that house would later be owned by Dan and Pat Kyle.  Also in the background are the Georgie Porgie restaurant (later a bank), the bowling alley (later a manufacturing plant), and an electrical substation.

The first step, on May 21, 1962, was to install a wide gravel driveway that would eventually run beside the house and be paved with asphalt.

Seven weeks later, it was time for an excavator built by the adjoining county's Marion Power Shovel Company to start digging a hole for the far end of the basement.
