We
bought five-eighths of an acre on the east side of town and began
construction on that lot.
Although
there were pastures and fields around us, we would not be isolated
out in the country. This was especially true after Richwood's

the left background of this picture is the home of our neighbor to
the west, Tom McMahon; that house would later be owned by Dan and Pat
Kyle. Also in the background are the Georgie Porgie restaurant
(later a bank), the bowling alley (later a manufacturing plant), and
an electrical substation.

first step, on May 21, 1962, was to install a wide gravel driveway
that would eventually run beside the house and be paved with asphalt.
Seven
weeks later, it was time for an excavator built by the adjoining
county's Marion Power Shovel Company to start digging a hole for the
far end of the basement.
