In my wood-paneled bedroom, notice that the windows are high on the walls, with sills about 4½ feet above the floor.  This allows more flexible furniture placement, because even tall pieces like dressers can be located directly in front of windows without blocking them.  It also provides privacy, because anyone on the outside (looking in) can't see much except the ceiling.  But you on the inside (looking out) can't see much except the sky — unless you stand up.

My room featured a hardwood floor and an attractive built-in desk and bookcase.  Unfortunately, the desk was not very deep, and its surface was too high for typing.  I had to put my typewriter on a lower table nearby.  Had personal computers existed in those days, I would also have had to find another place for the monitor and other equipment.
