The
exterior walls had reached this stage by Labor Day. The roof
would be on by mid-September (it was a dry summer, and my father was
proud of the fact that it never rained on the walls until they were
under roof). The interior walls would be plastered by
mid-October, and we hoped to be in our new home by Christmas.
Because
of the symmetrical roofline in the front, with the near gable for
the garage and the far gable for the front door and bedroom, I
thought of the house as "Twin Gables." But we never
officially used that name.
