My
uncle Ralph Buckingham had a 35-millimeter camera and took some
Kodachrome slides, probably in 1949 and 1950. His exterior
shots were a little underexposed for a cloudy day.
Nearly
60 years later, from the same angle, I took the second picture below
in November 2008.

Highland
Avenue, appropriately enough, runs along the top of a ridge.
The two-lane road serves as U.S. Route 22, headed toward Cadiz and
Steubenville. A detail from one of my uncle's slides (right)
reveals that in front of our house it was paved in brick, with curbs
and a very thin coating of asphalt. The asphalt is thicker nowadays. |
