Robert
Krulwich 1994: Why Am I Here?
Written
March 24, 2022
In
2019, during Oberlin College's Commencement ceremony, radio and
television journalist Robert Krulwich was awarded an Honorary Doctor
of Fine Arts degree. Robert and I, both alumni of student radio
station WOBC, were among those returning to campus to celebrate the
50th reunion of our Class of 1969.
Robert
was not given an opportunity to say a few words during the
ceremony. In fact, just before giving him his honorary degree,
they tried to gag him with the hood.
A
quarter century before, in 1994, I missed the 25th reunion.
However, the College later offered audio cassettes of some of the
events. I listened to mine, then put them into storage for a
couple of decades.
|
Listening
once again to those cassettes prior to the 50th reunion, I
rediscovered that Mr. Krulwich had been the speaker for the Class
Dinner on Sunday evening.
I've
uploaded more than half an hour from his entertaining talk, divided
into a dozen MP3 segments. |

Field's introduction. |
|
I
did meet the FBI. |
|
I
want to thank those who've contributed events to this reunion. |
|
I
knew many memorable people here at Oberlin. |
|
Some
left me in awe. |
|
|
However,
I lack political passion. |
|
After
college, there were new/old friends, and drugs. |
|
I
served as a Trustee, but then Oberlin became irrelevant. |
|
After
25 years, what do we share? Our age, and this place. |
|
Our
struggles have actually been welcome. |
|
Our
experiences have been precious. |
|
Conclusion:
Please give Oberlin $3, or more. |
