Decisions
Written March 14, 2006

It's time to repaint your house.  Should you keep it white, or should you go with another color?

Many people like to make two lists to help them decide.  They enumerate the advantages of each choice in separate columns.

.

WHITE

.

BLUE

1.

Blends in with neighbors

1.

It's time for a change

2.

Better market value for house

2.

Blue is Mom's favorite color

3.

White paint is cheaper

.

.

Since there are three points in favor of White but only two for Blue, you might decide that White is the better choice.

But what if all the points do not carry equal weight?  Maybe White's point 2 is irrelevant, because you're never planning to sell the house.  Maybe point 3 is weak, because you can buy blue paint almost as cheaply.

And what if you decide to broaden your options to include yellow, pink, chartreuse, and plaid?

I've devised a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to handle these more complicated situations.  Just click here to access my Decision Engine.
