When You're In Rome
Song written 1965

He who is wise
Will quite soon realize
That the thing to wear is a toga.

No one will be
So unwelcome as he
If he isn't dressed in a toga.

Hereabouts it helps to conform,
Not to deviate from the norm;

So if you're smart,
You will take this to heart
And just wear what Romans wear.

When you're in Rome,
Do as the Romans do!

When you're in Spain,
Do as the Spaniards do.

When you're in France,
Do as the Celts and Gauls and Frenchmen do,

But don't seem out of place!

People will talk
If you do something odd;

They'll think of you
As a provincial clod.

Don't be a square!
Just be correctly dressed and properly shod,

And don't seem out of place!

There are millions of citizens,
Ev'ryday citizens,
Here in the streets today,

Dressed in their togas,
Their flowing white togas;
A dignified group are they.

For you to be part of them,
Part of the heart of them,
All that you need to do

Is look like they look,
Act like they act,
Make them a part of you!

Since you're in Rome,
Do as the Romans do!

You'll feel at home
Doing as Romans do.

Just look the part:
Keep your shoulders back and your head held high,

And you won't be out of place!

[THE VISITOR:]

Since I'm in Rome,
I'll do as Romans do!

I feel at home
Doing as Romans do.

I look the part:
I've got my shoulders back and my head held high,

And I don't seem out of place.

Because there's fifty million other people
Dressed up just like me,

There's nothing strange about me,
Not so far as they can see.

What ev'rybody else is doing, I am doing too.
I'm doing what the Romans do!
